In this session, Peter-Paul Verbeek (Philosophy of Technology) and Jolien Francken (Philosophy of Neuroscience) will each present their perspective on epistemic iteration, a recent and influential concept in the history and philosophy of science introduced by Hasok Chang. We will discuss how epistemic iteration relates to mediation theory, and whether it can be used as a normative model for scientific progress.

Philosophy of science naturally connects many disciplines, since it reflects on scientific practices across fields: from general issues such as causal inference, scientific realism, and epistemic diversity to domain-specific questions in the philosophy of physics, biology, or psychology.

At the UvA, colleagues working on these topics are spread across different departments, and not everyone who engages with them identifies primarily as a philosopher of science. You might think of yourself first as an anthropologist, political scientist, mathematician, or something else, while your work still addresses how scientific knowledge is produced, justified, and used.
