The Institute for Advanced Study (IAS) is dedicated to pushing the boundaries of interdisciplinary research to address complex scientific and societal challenges. Our mission is to drive pioneering interdisciplinary research, uniting diverse fields to tackle complex scientific and societal challenges. Led by Professor Han van der Maas, our institute serves as a hub for innovative thinking and collaboration, engaging top researchers and fostering collaborative environments.

At the IAS we work on various topics, within four broad areas: Dynamic Social Systems, Coupled Human and Natural Systems, Health Systems Complexity, and Digital Societies and Infrastructures. This thematic approach allows for collaborations and innovations between different disciplines. We also explore methodological questions that concern all areas of research in our Foundations and Methods program. Moreover, the IAS contributes to policymaking by collaborating with governmental institutes and investigating the Governance of Complexity

Our approach can be divided in several roles:

Developing Interdisciplinary Methodology

We focus on integrating insights, techniques, and theories from multiple disciplines to advance understanding and tackle complex problems. Bridging disciplines, scales, and paradigms lies at the heart of our scientific endeavors.

Creating Space for Contemplative Science

The IAS provides a haven for scholars to step away from the academic race, fostering an environment where innovative ideas can flourish serendipitously. Through our fellowship program, researchers have the freedom to explore specific scientific questions in collaboration with like-minded peers.

Fostering Interdisciplinary Collaborations (Incubator)

We cultivate a collaborative research community that encourages creative, interdisciplinary thinking to drive new discoveries. By providing a physical space for multidisciplinary teams to collaborate, we promote synergy and facilitate cross-cutting discussions on fundamental questions.
