In the last months of 2022, IAS hosted two related events initiated by IAS fellow Fernando Nobrega Santos. These events aimed to further research the human brain using state-of-the-art theoretical methodologies in complex systems and engage other researchers in the use of openly available datasets.

‘Brain Hack’

First, IAS filled up with junior researchers for a 3-day hackathon to explore datasets from the Human Connectome (HCP) database. This ‘Brain Hack’ brought together Master’s and PhD students in natural sciences and neuroscience to make use of the data and engage them in related research challenges.

Bringing leading scholars together

Building on the hackathon, IAS and the Dutch Insitute for Emerging Phenomena (DIEP) co-hosted a Workshop on High Order Interactions, which brought together leading scholars in complex systems, information theory, complexity science and neuroscience in the Netherlands and beyond to discuss results and further research collaborations.
