The Institute for Advanced Study (IAS) of the University of Amsterdam (UvA) offers 8 outstanding Master's students the opportunity to join the IAS research community. You will get a part-time place to work on your final thesis in a stimulating environment alongside renowned researchers and talented early-career scholars. The best and most original thesis will be awarded with a prize: 500 euro in cash.

We live in a world where everything seems to be interwoven with everything else, and where cause and effect are hard to unravel. Climate change, pandemics and inequality are just some examples of pressing problems that require new ways of thinking and an interdisciplinary approach.

At the IAS, researchers from a wide range of disciplines work together on complex scientific and societal challenges. What they all have in common is curiosity, creativity and an enormous drive to delve into major questions. In their pursuit of new knowledge and solutions they are not afraid to colour outside the lines.

Selection

Candidates should be enrolled full-time at the UvA in a master’s programme. The selection is based on academic excellence, motivation, (inter)personal skills and thesis topic.

In order to be eligible for this opportunity, your thesis topic should be related to the overarching theme of the institute: complexity. Your will study a challenging scientific question from an interdisciplinary perspective. Preferably, the topic is linked to one of our current research projects or theme groups.

Period

Thesis writing: between Jan/Feb 2022 and July 2022

  • a description of your thesis topic, and your view on how your topic fits in with our current lines of research (max. 500 words);
  • a motivation letter (max. 300 words), e.g. why do you want to become part of the IAS community? why should we select you? what is the planned period for thesis writing;
  • Your CV and grades transcript.
