SPIN Reading Group: 'The Body Multiple'

Organised by the Science and Philosophy Interfaculty Network (SPIN)

Jolien Francken and Riet van Bork of the Science and Philosophy Interfaculty Network will be organising a SPIN reading group to read the classic book ‘The Body Multiple’ by Annemarie Mol. Over the course of seven sessions from September to December (one session every two weeks), the group will read through the book and meet to discuss each chapter.

We chose Annemarie Mol’s ‘The Body Multiple’ for this interdisciplinary reading group because it connects STS, philosophy of science, and medical anthropology through a detailed case study of atherosclerosis in hospital practice. Mol shows how a disease is enacted differently across medical practices, offering a nice starting point to discuss how disciplines, methods, and everyday work shape what counts as knowledge and reality.

People from all sorts of disciplines are welcome. Joining the reading club is possible either in person at IAS UvA (Amsterdam) or online.
