This session will mark the beginning of the seminar series "The Future of Science – How Could Science Otherwise Be?" Selected participants are invited to collectively map the themes that deserve our attention when reimagining science. While acknowledging the challenges academics face, this session also moves beyond these challenges by outlining future pathways towards different ways of doing science - pathways that can lead to novel and practical experiments to be developed within the academic collective over the coming year. Through facilitated dialogue, small-group work and plenary reflection, participants explore two guiding questions: which themes should be prioritised, and which existing examples already show that science can be practised otherwise. The outcome is a list of themes and a collection of ‘luminous examples’ that will inform the design of the follow-up seminar series.

Speakers

Dr. Roanne van Voorst

Dr. Roanne van Voorst is a futures anthropologist and Assistant Professor, University of Amsterdam. She is Chair of the Futures Reframed Foundation, a scholar-led foundation that aims to explore alternative pathways for the future of science.

Dr. Tessa Cramer

Dr. Tessa Cramer is Professor of Designing the Future at Fontys University of Applied Sciences. Her research explores how awe, uncertainty and imagination may influence collective decision-making. She is co-founder and board member of Futures Reframed, where she works on reimagining scientific and institutional practices.

About the organiser: Futures Reframed

IAS and Futures Reframed collaborate to open space for scholars to rethink how science is practised. The Futures Reframed foundation aims to amplify existing and hopeful alternatives and to support scholars in experimenting with practices that embody care, collaboration and curiosity. IAS contributes through its interdisciplinary network, convening power and support for experimental scholarly formats.

IAS Festival: Celebrating 10 years of the UvA Institute for Advanced Study

From 18 to 21 May 2026, the University of Amsterdam's Institute for Advanced Study celebrates its 10th anniversary with the IAS Festival: a week-long programme dedicated to reflection, exchange and forward-looking dialogue. The festival marks a decade of boundary-crossing interdisciplinary research while exploring the complex questions that will shape the years to come.

The programme includes the launch of a special anniversary publication "The Edge of Knowing", alongside a series of Future Challenges sessions that bring together leading thinkers from science, society, policy and the arts. Participants will have the opportunity to engage with urgent themes, transcending disciplinary boundaries and exploring new perspectives in lectures, discussions and interactive sessions.
