Masterclass by journalist Sanne Bloemink
The UvA Institute for Advanced Study (IAS) invites curious and motivated students to take part in the IAS Festival (18 – 21 May) and share their own perspectives on challenging themes such as climate change, polarisation, AI, and mental health, through a written column. During this week in May, IAS celebrates its 10th anniversary with a week of dialogue, reflection and forward-looking conversations with leading researchers and thinkers in complexity science. As a participating student, you will be part of this vibrant intellectual environment and contribute your own perspective in written form.
Participants will take part in an in-depth masterclass led by journalist and author Sanne Bloemink (De Groene Amsterdammer, Pijn – een expeditie naar onbestemd gebied, 2023). The session offers:
Insight into the everyday practice of (science) journalism
Practical guidance on pitching ideas and writing opinion pieces
Tools for translating complex research into accessible, engaging stories
Students attend IAS Festival sessions related to selected themes and write a short column connecting the discussions to society from their own perspective. Selected pieces may receive feedback from Sanne Bloemink and may be considered for further publication.
This experience offers a behind-the-scenes look at an international research institute and the chance to connect with academics, journalists, communicators, and artists, strengthening both your portfolio and professional network.
Interested students can register via the link below for the masterclass on 15 April (10:30–12:30, including lunch). After registration, we will contact you with further details about participation in the IAS Festival writing project.
From 18 to 21 May 2026, the University of Amsterdam's Institute for Advanced Study celebrates its 10th anniversary with the IAS Festival: a week-long programme dedicated to reflection, exchange and forward-looking dialogue. The festival marks a decade of boundary-crossing interdisciplinary research while exploring the complex questions that will shape the years to come.
The programme includes the launch of a special anniversary publication "The Edge of Knowing", alongside a series of Future Challenges sessions that bring together leading thinkers from science, society, policy and the arts. Participants will have the opportunity to engage with urgent themes, transcending disciplinary boundaries and exploring new perspectives in lectures, discussions and interactive sessions.
