The Interdisciplinary Lemon Tree Center is hosting a closed brainstorm session among academics and clinicians on the role of DSM and potential alternatives for the Dutch Mental Health Care system. In the Netherlands, the DSM of the American Psychiatric Association (APA) serves as cornerstone for its mental health care system as diagnostic tool, entrance to the GGZ, financial tool en measure of efficacy of treatments. Since the Dutch mental health care system is hardly sustainable, fundamental questions arise about the crucial role of DSM. Is it adequately reflecting all different perspectives on mental suffering? Does it express only the medical perspective? Is it sufficiently cultural diverse? What about its reliability and validity? In this session, we will discuss the different perspectives on the use of DSM and work towards reaching common grounds with experts, such as psychiatrists, philosophers, psychologists and psychotherapists.
