Event details of Round Table Discussion
Date
19 June 2025
Time
12:30 -17:30

We are standing on the shoulders of our ancestors and with our actions and decisions today, we are shaping the world in which future generations will live. We kindly invite you to join a round table discussion to discuss how our actions impact tomorrow’s world, and how we can take the interests of future generations into account. The UN Declaration on Future Generations highlights our responsibility to take the interests of future generations into account. How to do this, and how to live up to that responsibility and translate the words of the declaration into tangible action will be the topic of our round table discussion. In order for science to serve society, we need clarity on which knowledge is needed for policymakers to create the environment that allows all human beings to thrive.

In the world of today, we face many challenges and for many, the future does not seem bright. The round table discussion aims to bring together different stakeholders. To foster a fruitful dialogue that builds connections, inspires and helps build agency and to fuel hope for a better future. To actively and constructively contribute to the future as though the lives of all our descendants depend on it - because they do.

The focus of the round table discussions is on the health of future generations and how people, policies and practices can take the interests of future generation into account to allow all future generations to develop to their full potential.

Goal

  • To initiate a conversation between scientists, policy makers and health professionals to discuss what is needed to take action to create a world in which every human being gets a fair chance to develop to its full potential (no matter where or when it is born).
  • To weave a network of policymakers, organizations and scientists around Future Generations.
  • To create clarity on which knowledge gaps need to be addressed in order to scientists to serve society and translate the UN Declaration into policy and practice?

Discussants include former UN Ambassador Yoka Brandt, sir Peter Gluckman (president International Science Council, Sophie Howe (first Future Generations Commissioner, Wales), and representatives from the EU Policy Lab, Dutch Government, Health Council, Scientific Council for Government Policy Advice, Senate, Joint Health Foundations and more.

The round table discussion will consist of three parts. Each with its own focus.

Discussants will be asked to open the discussion with a pitch in which they share their perspective and advice. The discussion will then be open to all (led by Huub Dijstelbloem and Tessa Roseboom).
