My research

I am a Pure Mathematician by training. In particular, I work in an area of algebraic geometry called birational geometry and the Minimal Model Program. I am also involved in more interdisciplinary projects in research capacity building in the mathematical sciences in the Global South, in Africa in particular. I am part of several networks and organisations that are focusing on equitable mathematical collaborations between Global North and Global South partners.

IAS Fellowship

Together with Michael Obiero Oyengo (Maseno University, Kenya) and Jim Portegies (Eindhoven University), we propose to investigate the impact of emerging technologies on mathematical communities in the Global South, with particular focus on Sub-Saharan Africa. Rapid developments in generative AI and proof assistants such as Lean are reshaping mathematical research and education. These technologies offer significant opportunities to democratise access to global mathematical communities through online platforms, large-scale collaboration, and tools supporting teaching and learning. AI systems can assist in the discovery, formalisation, and verification of mathematical results. However, these developments also risk exacerbating existing inequalities. Access to such tools depends on reliable internet infrastructure and financial resources, potentially widening the gap between well-resourced and under-resourced institutions. The future of mathematics in the Global South depends not only on access, but also on meaningful participation in the decision-making process on how these technologies are developed and used.
