On 13 June 2024, the UvA Institute for Advanced Study (IAS) and art collective RAAAF, hosted an inspiring event focused on the intersection of art and science. Attendees gathered to experience "Still Life," a visionary work by Ronald and Erik Rietveld, the dynamic duo behind RAAAF. Ronald Rietveld, a previous Artist-in-Residence at the IAS, guided participants to Het Hem, where art and architecture converge in groundbreaking ways.

Looking Through a Lens of Art

The day began with a reception at IAS, where Prof. Huub Dijstelbloem introduced part of the Institute’s mission to nurture imagination and facilitate mutual inspiration across artistic and scientific research methods and perspectives. This way IAS seeks to foster a culture of continuous questioning and innovative thinking to explore complex societal and scientific issues through the lens of art and science. The select group, consisting of researchers, artists, curators, and policy makers, including the President of the KNAW, then embarked to visit the artwork in situ at Het Hem, offering a perfect setting for stimulating conversations and networking.

Still Life

At Het Hem, Ronald and Erik Rietveld presented their work, "Still Life", captivating the audience with their approach in the intersection of visual art, experimental architecture and the philosophy of embodied cognition. Their presentation showcased many of their other award-winning projects and highlighted the impact of integrating artistic thinking into architectural design. The day at Het Hem illustrated how blending art and science can lead to novel ways of seeing and imagining, spark new ideas and creative pathways, and demonstrate the effectiveness of interdisciplinary approaches in solving complex challenges.
