During the past years, IAS has helped develop the UvA initiative POLicy Decision-support and Evidence-based Reasoning (POLDER). POLDER is a research collaborative that helps policymakers to unravel complex challenges, create actionable insights, and explore new avenues of intervention using theories and tools from complexity science, system dynamics and network science. POLDER works together with researchers from all academic fields, and in co-creation with the direct stakeholders, to support responsible and effective decision-making.

New projects

In 2022, we have seen the launch of several new projects applying these novel decision-support methods through group model building, ranging from exploring criminal financial networks to the personal microbiome. In parallel, work is ongoing to develop a Master program, in collaboration with IIS, focusing on complexity and policymaking.

With additional support of UvA, IAS will further support the development of POLDER as a research collaboration and pioneer new ways of conducting interdisciplinary research that is directly connected to education and valorization to develop best practices for cross-faculty collaborations in the future.
