Coupled Oscillators, Synchronization, and Higher-Order Phase Interactions
Synchronization is a fascinating effect of the interaction between coupled oscillatory units and is ubiquitous in physical systems. If the coupling between units is sufficiently weak, the reduction to phase variables is a useful dimensionality reduction technique to analyze the synchronization dynamics.
Here we discuss how non-pairwise 'higher-order' phase interactions arise in higher-order phase reductions, how they depend on the shape of the limit cycles and the underlying network structure, and the information they give on synchronization.
Christian Bick, an Associate Professor in the Department of Mathematics at Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam, is also a fellow at the Mathematical Institute at the University of Oxford, the University of Exeter, and the Technische Universität München. His research focuses on the dynamics of coupled oscillator networks, particularly with generalized, higher-order, and adaptive interactions.
