On July 2, 2024, the IAS will organize its first IAS Academy, which seeks to bring the 'IAS experience' to a larger group of early career researchers, specifically for PhD students (Aio's) and postdocs. In the course of a full day, participants from entirely different disciplines will delve deep into one theme, such as climate change and displacement, polarization or emergence in complex systems.

The Institute for Advanced Study (IAS) of the UvA is known for its cross-disciplinary dialogues and development of interdisciplinary approaches. At IAS, experts from different disciplines reflect on complex societal and scientific challenges. Participating in such workshops is a special experience and often sparks novel ideas and collaborations into the future.

At the IAS Academy, we will extend this 'IAS experience' to a broader audience of early career researchers, with a focus on PhD students (Aio's) and postdocs. The day will be inaugurated by the UvA’s rector, Professor Peter-Paul Verbeek.

In the course of a full day, under the leadership of senior scholars, participants will delve deep into one topic with participants from entirely different disciplines on themes like climate change and displacement, polarization or emergence in complex systems Our joint day of slow science will culminate in a festive get-together at the Brug in the Roeterseiland complex.

Participation is free of charge, but will require commitment to prepare and show up with curiosity, and an open and collaborative mindset.

As a follow-up to the conference, participating groups are invited to submit a proposal for a new research line at IAS to jointly pursue. If selected, the group will be provided regular meeting space at IAS for one year, organizational and network support and a seed funding budget of 5.000 EUR.

Below you can find the workshop overview of the IAS Academy. In your registration you can select three workshops of your choice and indicate whether you could give an introductory 'state of the art' pitch on the topic from your disciplinary view.

The IAS Team will assign you to a workshop. The hosting team will be in touch with preparatory instructions.

Please note that admission to the academy is in order of registration and UvA based researchers are given priority.
