My research

I primarily research how new technologies impact professional cultures in and around media organizations. For example, we recently published a paper in which we explore how knowledge silos affected the way journalists are adopting responsible AI practices in journalism. Our analysis found that knowledge silos are a significant barrier to the effective integration of AI within news organizations. We observed that these silos often prevent cross-departmental collaboration for the adoption of AI technologies. This has huge ethical and professional implications. My IAS fellowship is a direct continuation of that project -- Now we are looking at how to break those silos down.

IAS Fellowship

During this fellowship, I will study how knowledge silos within news organizations in the Netherlands hinder the flow of information, making it more challenging to adopt AI systems in line with organizational and professional values. This study employs a mixed-methods approach, incorporating ethnographic methods such as observations and interviews in Dutch newsrooms to capture the practical decision-making processes involved in integrating AI technologies. By identifying successful initiatives to break these silos, the project aims to develop a framework that ensures diverse stakeholders, both within and outside media organizations, are informed about the risks and opportunities associated with these systems.
