Future of Energy

At the IAS we bring together researchers from the social and behavioural sciences, economics and business, law and political science, as well as natural sciences, working on the multi-dimensional aspects of the energy transition and energy conversion to explore a collaborative and integrated approach.

Policy makers on all levels of governance are confronted with the complex challenge of designing effective and responsible interventions, for which they need to integrate insights from many disciplines. The combination of multiple interventions should lead to the desired outcome on the overall system level.

At the IAS, researchers from many different disciplines are brought together to explore an integrated system's approach towards assessing and implementing the energy transition. Key questions to be addressed are:

  • How can the energy transition be realised as fast as possible, taking into account the many boundary conditions that apply as well as aspects related to society, economy, and ecology?
  • How can lessons from the past be used to design successful policies and instruments for the future? How can science work together with society to find an optimal transition path?

Since 2022, the close interaction between the FoE seminars and a new interfaculty research priority area (RPA) of the University of Amsterdam, ENLENS (Energy Transition through the Lens of Sustainable Development Goals), has delivered new insights and discussions on how the European energy transition can have impacts across the entire world and is strongly intertwined with essentially all Sustainable Development Goals. The FoE seminars and ENLENS jointly generate key findings that can help us answering the multiple challenges of the energy transition and building a sustainable future together"

Seminar series

The UvA Future of Energy network organises monthly seminars. The programme of each seminar consists of two presentations on the energy transition, coming from different academic fields, followed by general discussions that are relevant for the UvA Future of Energy network.

In the event calendar you can find all upcoming events. In the seminar archive you can find all presentations of past events.
