The development of data infrastructures, information systems, algorithms and artificial intelligence is inextricably linked to shaping societies, political systems, media, and markets. Interdisciplinary research is required to understand and actively engage with the ways these transformations take place across the globe. To foster interdisciplinary collaboration, research at IAS combines the study of the social, ethical, legal and political aspects of digital transitions with research into cognitive AI, computational science, data science, and methodologies to understand information systems. Research projects at IAS combine different methods ranging from fundamental discussions about the foundations of specific approaches, exploring evolving methodological integration across disciplines, to rethinking key concepts such as 'data', 'algorithm', 'platform', 'infrastructure', 'AI', ‘data ethics’ and 'data justice’ and collaborations with societal stakeholders, and industries.
