IAS for artists

The 2024 IAS Artist Residency

For whom

The IAS is particularly interested in artists whose work addresses urgent social and scientific challenges related to the IAS's core themes.

The current opening for this residency has a particular focus on themes including (1) sustainability and climate change, (2) social complexity, especially polarisation and inequality, and (3) digital societies & AI.

We would like to work with and learn from an artist who is able to collaborate with researchers from all parts of academia (natural sciences/social sciences/humanities) and who is eager to collaborate on research at the intersection of the arts and sciences that stimulates the imagination and opens up new approaches.

The residency is open to an artist, working independently or as part of a collective, who resides and can work in the Netherlands and has a relevant portfolio with a demonstrable interest and track record in working as/with scientific researchers across disciplines. We will ask applicants to demonstrate the kinds of research methods they use in their own work and how they have used these methods in interaction with scientific researchers. The aims of the residency are to establish joint research collaborations, organise and/or contribute to events that integrate artistic and scientific research that activates/stimulates the imagination and/or furthers analysis. Activities should include, but are not limited to, researchers working at IAS. Widening the circle to include other researchers or external partners is warmly welcomed.

What we offer

  • UvA guest status for the duration of the residency
  • a monthly stipend of 5.000 EUR (as a lump sum)
  • Seed funding of up to 3.000 EUR (can also be used to fund production/materials)

What we expect

  • Openness and proactive outreach to connect to scientific researchers, internally as well as externally to show and explain the potential collaborations across art and science
  • Active participation in research and community events
  • Contribution to the overall programming of IAS
  • Commitment to creating (the concept for) a specific artwork
  • Acknowledgement of the residency in artistic work/publications resulting thereof
