Most restrictions in higher education and research have been lifted, which allows us to bring back the liveliness on site. Several interdisciplinary theme groups have restarted their regular meetups at the institute, our international fellows are scheduling their visits to Amsterdam, and we are preparing various events to nurture transdisciplinary thinking and to let new ideas emerge.

Many breakthroughs in modern science happen at the interface of previously unconnected fields of insight. One of the core missions of the IAS is to advance novel fundamental research and the development of integrative research methodology in an interdisciplinary context.

At the institute, we accommodate a mixture of:

  1. Events (mainly small-scale workshops/brainstorms and open network/social events);
  2. Interdisciplinary theme and project groups (self-organised);
  3. Individual work space (e.g. for fellows).

We will continue using online formats as well, for example for research presentations.

Bottom-up programming

Researchers can contribute to the explorative discussions and lines of research at IAS by joining one of our current areas of research, or by suggesting a new interdisciplinary research topic. New topics can be part of a fellowship application, but can also emerge during IAS events.

You can contact us directly, or one of the IAS Associates, to discuss your ideas. We look forward to having many inspiring conversations on site again, for which your suggestions are welcome. The UvA Institute for Advanced Study is - above all - its community!

Reviving interconnections in the IAS community

Besides being an incubator for new interdisciplinary research themes within three domains (coupled human and natural systems, social systems, and health systems), we focus our efforts on identifying cross-cutting questions, concepts and methods that can be further explored between the different themes. This requires creating the right conditions for spontaneous interactions. To revive, strengthen and maintain the interconnections in our community we will regularly have joint lunches and network drinks at the institute.
