Many breakthroughs in modern science happen at the interface of previously unconnected fields of insight, but it requires intensive and extended conversation. In order to stimulate thorough and creative multidisciplinary brainstorming, we launch a new funding programme for blue sky research workshops.

With this new programme we specifically aim to create the right conditions for researchers to hit upon new ideas in a serendipitous way; time for slow science! We encourage and financially support applicants to involve outstanding guest researchers and leading thinkers to participate in the workshops. Only four of these exclusive workshop grants will be awarded per year.

What is offered

  • Use of the IAS venues and facilities (coffee/tea and lunch included);
  • Organisational support from the IAS office;
  • Financial support to cover: e.g. travel and accommodation for guest researchers, welcome dinner, network event, professional moderator, production costs for outreach deliverables, etc. Maximum: €12.000 per workshop.

What is expected

  • Multiple day interactive workshops (≥ 3 days);
  • At least one activity aimed at interaction with interested IAS community members;
  • At least one tangible outreach deliverable: e.g. essay, paper, video/animation/vlog, podcast, debate, performance.

Application criteria

  • Only UvA researchers or IAS-affiliated researchers (e.g. external faculty members) can apply as main applicant;
  • The group of participants has to be multidisciplinary and ≥ 30% UvA-based.

Selection

The IAS Board of Associates will select the winning proposals based on:

  • Scientific quality and originality;
  • Workshop plan and outreach deliverable;
  • Composition of the group of participants.

The winning applicants get a senior IAS-affiliated researcher appointed as contact person to discuss the synergy potential with other IAS activities before the workshop, and to shortly evaluate the workshop afterwards.
