Did you know that at the UvA more than 100 researchers, spread across all faculties, apply advanced computational modelling and simulation methods in their research? They have recently established the UvA Simulation-based Science community (SbS@UvA); a network that aims to facilitate the exchange of knowledge and skills, and to spark new multidisciplinary research initiatives. The IAS is the physical home base of SbS@UvA.
Simulation-based Science is all about formulating computational models of phenomena that we observe and performing computer simulations in order to deepen our understanding of the systems that underpin these phenomena. The aim is to predict their future behaviour or to find adaptations that would change their behaviour in some desired way. Simulation-based science is sometimes called the third pillar of science and complements theory and experiments.
In order to facilitate networking, interaction and collaboration between its members, SbS@UvA organises monthly thematic meetings. In the first half of 2018 the following topics will be discussed:
|26 April 2018||Agent-based Modelling|
|31 May 2018||Network Science|
|29 June 2018||Computing beyond the desktop|
Furthermore, members of the community meet weekly in the SbS@UvA club; an informal gathering with no agenda other than a plenary one-hour session, organised by junior scientists (e.g. lectures, discussions, a journal club).
The events of the Simulation-based Science community are co-organised and hosted by the UvA Institute for Advanced Study (IAS).
The number of researchers at the UvA that apply advanced computational modelling and simulation methods in their research is expected to be even larger than the current 100 who have joined the network so far.
