Programme directors lead the development of selected IAS research areas.
Professor of Urban Planning, University of Amsterdam
IAS research programme: Urban Complexity (ad interim)
I work on the integration of transport and land use planning, on concepts for coping with uncertainty in planning, and on ways of enhancing theory-practice interaction. My publication topics include planning for sustainable accessibility in urban regions, conceptualising urbanism in the network society, and the application of evolutionary theories to planning.

Tom van Engers
Professor of Legal Knowledge Management, University of Amsterdam
IAS research programme: Networks of Crime and Terrorism
My work in the field of artificial intelligence and law goes back to 1983. My recent research is on effectiveness of policies, regulations, compliance monitoring and enforcement mechanisms in societies of agents. My particular interest is in adaptive behavior of such regulated societies.

Professor of Anthropology of Health and Social Care, University of Amsterdam
IAS research programme: Health Systems Complexity
In my research work on global health issues I combine social sciences and medicine. I am interested in a broad range of subjects, from reproductive health in women, HIV/AIDS, and the social impact of pharmaceuticals on vulnerable youths to the relationship between health and global sustainable development and the role of chemical substances in the lives of young people.

Professor of Economic Dynamics, University of Amsterdam
IAS research programme: Complexity in Economics and Finance
My research focus is on complex systems applications in economics and finance. My work includes behavioural macroeconomics; experimental macroeconomics & finance; behavioural finance, bounded rationality; expectation formation and learning; heterogeneous agent modelling.

Peter M.A. Sloot
Professor of Computational Science, University of Amsterdam
Professor of Complex System Simulations, NTU Singapore
IAS research programme: Foundations of Complex Systems
My research focuses on how nature processes information, using computational modelling and simulation as well as formal methods. This work has many applications, such as modelling the virology and epidemiology of infectious diseases (e.g. HIV). My theoretical work focuses on out-of-equilibrium dynamics of complex adaptive systems using information theory and thermodynamics.
