Computational model clarifies immune response during cardiac surgery
An interdisciplinary research team of computational scientists, biologists, medical scientists, and mathematicians, led by Peter Sloot, professor of Complex Adaptive Systems at the UvA and Scientific Director of the IAS, has managed to identify the mechanisms behind the immune response triggered in patients undergoing open heart surgery. The results were recently published in the leading open-access journal Frontiers in Immunology.
Health Systems Complexity at the IAS
Immune fitness is one of the research topics under the Health Systems Complexity theme. At the IAS we aim to develop predictive models for various health related questions, examining all aspects from the molecular level all the way up to the healthcare system. The main research challenge is to understand the multiscale and dynamic interplay between the physiological, mental/behaviourial, and socio-economic aspects of health and well-being.
