IAS Associate Jelle Bruineberg (Philosophy) is awarded an ABC (Amsterdam Brain and Cognition) Talent Grant. With this grant, Bruineberg aims to submit a NWO VENI-proposal on the topic of ‘explanation in adaptive agent-environment systems’.

The ABC Talent Grant offers a bridging period for high-potential post-doc researchers to apply for an external research grant. Bruineberg: “I am fascinated by the question of how the brain, the body and the environment together bring about adaptive behavior. I think we lack a coherent framework for explaining how these elements integrate with each other. In this project, I want to look both at the philosophy of explanation and at best practices of explanation in complex systems science. I hope this will help me to further develop an explanatory framework for adaptive behavior in future work.”

Jelle Bruineberg will defend his PhD dissertation, titled: “Anticipating Affordances: intentionality in self-organizing brain-body-environment systems”, on 7 March 2018, 11:00 in the Aula of the University of Amsterdam.
