Debate on scientific methods

05Nov2018 09:30 - 17:30

Event

In this one-day debate we will discuss fundamental methodological differences in science and research across the academic disciplines.

In society there is much debate about the value of science and research, and the truth it may (or may not) uncover. At the same time, countless scientific methods can be found in universities. Every academic discipline has its own methodological discussions; on statistical and experimental methods, interview techniques, big data, the value of certain mathematical methods, etcetera. Scientists and researchers are educated and trained in a certain tradition, in which they often stay for the rest of their careers. In this one-day debate, we will discuss fundamental methodological differences in science and research across the academic disciplines.

At the end of the day we aim to have a first outline for a university-wide interdisciplinary course on scientific methods.

Scientific lead:

Han van der Maas, Professor of Psychological Methods
Huub Dijstelbloem, Professor of Philosophy of Science and Politics
