Complexity in Science and Society

On the occasion of its External Boards meeting, the IAS organises an academic discussion on complexity in science and society.

Characteristics of complex systems (e.g. tipping points, emergence, intractability, resilience) are found in many of today’s most pressing scientific and societal challenges. There is a growing need to strengthen interdisciplinary collaboration in pursuit of a deeper understanding of the underlying principles that govern the complexity of our world. In this academic discussion, the topic will be introduced starting with two lectures:

  • Quantum Simplicity: the science of complexity in a quantum world
    by Dr Mile Gu
  • Data driven modeling of urban complex systems:  from crowd dynamics to slum dynamics
by Dr Mike Lees and Dr Debraj Roy
